Pasture Improvement Workshop

April 19 & May 12, 2022 at 8:00 pm

The Thunder Bay Beef Farmers, with support from the Ecological Farmers of Ontario, are offering a short workshop series on developing a fertility plan for your pastures. Join OMAFRA’s Christine O’Reilly (Forage and Grazing Specialist) and Christine Brown (Manure Specialist) as they explain how to soil sample your fields and then how to use those results in developing a plan for your pastures.

The $30 cost is per farm and includes one soil sample. Farms will be expected to take their own sample and drop it off to Bruce Forrest by April 24. Additional samples can be purchased for $25 per sample.

Session 1: Tuesday, April 19 at 8:00pm EST. This first session will be held over zoom.

Christine O’Reilly will cover how to take a proper soil sample using either a soil probe or spade. Christine Brown will touch on how and why manure sampling is worth considering as part of developing a fertility plan.

Session 2: Thursday, May 12 at 8:00pm EST. This session will likely be held in person. Details to come.

After we soil tests come back from the lab, the next step will be developing a plan for pasture fertility. You will have your own soil test results on hand so you can refer to these results for part of the workshop. Christine O’Reilly (and special guest) will cover the main nutrients to consider, soil pH, and what is limiting your production.
